2,250 environmental professionals network at industry events

The environmental trade exhibitions Irish Water Waste & Environment (IWWE) and Irish Recycling & Waste Management (IRWM) attracted an impressive 2,250 industry professionals to network, source and meet suppliers, keep up-to-date with industry and legislative developments and get free professional training. The shows were held on 5-6 March at the RDS in Dublin.

Exhibitors displayed and demonstrated a large variety of environmental products and services to interested visitors across the Main and Industries Hall as well as an outdoor display area at the RDS. A number of interesting product launches were featured at the show, keeping visitors up-to-date with new technologies.

Crowded seminar rooms were evidence of the popularity of the free CPD accredited seminar programmes hosted by CIWM Ireland, the Irish Composting Association CRE, the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland (ESAI) and the newly formed training network, EnviroSkillnet. The seminars attracted a large number of attendees, leaving only standing space in many sessions. The water seminar programme, dedicated to professionals dealing with water quality and treatment, addressed the implementation of the Water Framework Directive on the island of Ireland. The string of seminars was opened by Jim Bowman of the EPA on Wednesday morning. Presentations from academics and industry professionals followed on both days, including an update on waste water standards, leakage prevention and SUDS as flood management tools.

The highlight of the waste seminar programme, dedicated to professionals dealing with recycling and waste management, was a panel discussion about the future of waste management in Ireland. The overall consent emerging from the debate was that the waste industry needs a responsible body to develop and enforce a national strategy. It was pointed out that there is great expertise present in the Irish waste sector, which needs to be brought together effectively.

Additional seminars for Environmental and Energy Managers proved equally successful with presentations covering topical issues such as Display Energy Certificates, how energy management can help companies save money, climate change, help for companies who want to reduce CO2 emissions, and the implementation of the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD) in Ireland.

The newly launched Innovation Lounge gave industry and academics the opportunity to discuss latest environmental research projects and form strategic partnerships to advance the Irish environmental sector.

The launch of the IWWE & IRWM Innovation Award celebrated excellence and innovation in the environmental sector with its first winner, Lennox Ltd's Albin AD pump.

Building on the success of this year's show, Faversham House Group, the shows' organiser, will continue to work closely with steering committees comprising leading industry professionals to ensure industry needs and developments are once again closely reflected. IWWE & IRWM 2009 will be held on 24-25 March 2009, moving to the Simmonscourt complex of the RDS to offer better facilities for both exhibitors and visitors.
